How Small Hotels Win More Direct Bookings

Practical ways to get guests booking with you, not through an OTA. Written for small hotels, villas and guesthouses.
How Small Hotels Win More Direct Bookings

Why direct bookings matter

When a guest books through a big booking site, you pay 15 to 20 percent of the booking in commission. On top of that, the booking site keeps the relationship. You often cannot email the guest before arrival, and you cannot invite them back next year. A direct booking costs you almost nothing and the guest is yours.

Start with a booking page you are proud of

Most small properties lose direct bookings at the same place: the guest looks for a way to book direct, finds a slow website or a WhatsApp number, and gives up. They go back to the app they already trust. Your first job is a fast, simple page with your rooms, real availability and a working payment button. If a guest can book in two minutes on their phone, many will.

Make paying easy for every guest

International guests want to pay by card. Indonesian guests want QRIS, a virtual account or an e-wallet. If your payment options only work for one group, you lose the other. Offer both and say so on your booking page.

Use the OTAs to feed your direct channel

Booking sites are still your best source of new guests. That is fine. The trick is what happens after the first stay. Collect every guest email at check-in. Send one friendly message after the stay with a simple offer: book direct next time and get a better rate, a late checkout or a free airport pickup. Repeat guests are the cheapest bookings you will ever get.

Keep your rates honest

Guests compare. If your direct price is higher than your OTA price, nobody books direct. Keep the direct rate the same or slightly better, and add a small perk only direct guests get.
